Dans cet article, on vous faisait l’apologie de la fonction dite “cath-all” proposée par certains fournisseurs comme Gandi. Pour résumer, cette fonction vous permettait de disposer virtuellement d’une infinité d’adresse mail avec votre propre nom de domaine. Très pratique pour lutter contre le spam et fournir une adresse mail différente pour chauqe usage (fnac@votre_domaine.com, ebay@votre_domaine.com, etc).

Et c’est précisément pour des problèmes de spam que le renommé Gandi a décidé d’arrêter ce service le 29 février 2008.

Dommage.

Dans un article précédent, on avait expliqué comment IMAP permettait de synchroniser une boite mail entre un client normal (genre outlook sur PC ou Mail sur MacOS) et vos webmail. Cette fois ci nous allons un peu plus loin en permettant de la faire, en une seule fois pour tous vos comptes mail.

Depuis quelques semaines je teste une solution. Elle n’est pas parfaite mais marche plutôt bien pour moi. Je vous explique…

Il vous faut :

• un compte gmail
• un “client mail” qui accepte le IMAP

Et c’est tout.

L’objectif est double:

1. disposer d’un webmail entièrement synchronisé avec son client mail préféré,
2. n’avoir qu’un seul accès pour tous ses comptes emails (et du coup là aussi entièrement synchronisé).

Dans un précédent article, on évoquait les forces comparées des webmails (consultation sur un site Internet) et des logiciels de messagerie dits “lourds” (installés sur un PC).

Il existe une approche hybride, qui permet de combiner un certain nombre d’avantages des deux solutions respectives:

1. pouvoir lire ses mails sur tout ordinateur connecté, même ceux déjà archivés
2. pouvoir disposer à la maison du confort d’un logiciel de messagerie

Cette solution, elle porte le nom d’IMAP (pour Internet Message Access Protocol, voir ce qu’en dit Wikipedia).

Cette solution permet bien plus que de simplement télécharger ses emails à la maison, elle permet de les synchroniser.

Quelles alternatives existe-t-il ?

Les deux solutions les plus répandues consistent soit à lire directement ses mails depuis un site Internet (ce qu’on appelle un “Webmail”), soit à rapatrier tous ses mails localement sur son ordinateur, à l’aide d’un logiciel de messagerie (ce qu’on appelle un “client mail”). On verra qu’il existe également une approche hybride, qui permet de combiner les avantages des deux approches.

Avant de revenir dans un prochain article sur la manière d’acheter et gérer son propre nom de domaine, il convient d’en lister les avantages. Avoir son propre nom de domaine (famillemartin.fr par exemple), c’est bien sûr la possibilité d’avoir un site web à l’adresse www.famillemartin.fr, mais c’est aussi la possibilité de disposer d’adresses mails en @famillemartin.fr

Pourquoi m’embêter avec ça, mon adresse t...@orange.fr me va très bien ?

Toute personne qui déménage rêve d’un service qui lui permette automatiquement de faire suivre son courrier. Toute personne qui change d’opérateur de téléphone rêve d’un process simple et immédiat pour garder son numéro. Tout cela existe bien sûr, mais jamais avec autant de facilité qu’on le voudrait.

Pour les adresses mail, c’est pareil. Vous aurez peut être envie/besoin de changer de fournisseur un jour. Ou alors vous avez une adresse indépendante d’un fournisseur, comme une adresse hotmail, gmail, etc. Mais qui vous garantit que ces adresses sont réellement pérennes ?

Avoir sa propre adresse mail, en plus d’être plus agréable et plus mnemotechnique (cont...@famillemartin.fr, ça le fait plus que fami...@orange.fr, non ?), c’est surtout la possibilité de rendre “transparent” vos changements de fournisseurs d’accès. Vous passez de Orange à Neuf (ou l’inverse) ? Pas de problème, vous pouvez garder votre adresse mail…
